Wapta Traverse

Ski tour the Wapta traverse.

The Wapta Traverse is the classic hut to hut high alpine ski tour that travels along the continental divide. We offer a four day trip.

Day 1: Start at Peyto Lake and tour across the lake and up the drainage to Peyto Glacier. Gain the glacier and the hut, a full day with 2000 feet elevation over 9 km.

Day 2: Start crossing the ice field, up and over the St Nichoals/Olive col then descending down to the Balfour Hut. We often try to climb Mt Olive or Mt Rhonda along the way or ski descend the Vulture Col if conditions and skiing skills permit.

Day 3: A long high alpine tour up and over the Balfour high col and a nice ski decent down to the Scott Duncan Hut. If conditions are good we can try for the big guy, the south ridge on Mt Balfour the highest peak on the Wapta.

Day 4: A long 3500 feet ski descent down the Niles Glacier, into Sherbrooke Creek and out to the car park. With good conditions the Bath Glacier exit is an option for the way out.
